HUTTON AND HOWICK WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

ABOUT US

Our monthly meetings are held in New Longton Methodist Church Hall at 7.30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month, except for the holiday period of August when there is no meeting but an outing is usually arranged.   Members are asked to pay 50p at each meeting to cover refreshment costs.   We aim to make our meetings both entertaining and informative in a warm and friendly atmosphere.   Our speakers talk on a wide range of subjects both humorous and thought provoking.

From time to time 3 or 4 members will be asked to assist in making refreshments at the end of the monthly meeting, also with the baking of cakes.   With our current membership of around 60 this works out at less than once a year.

At most of the meetings a competition is held and you will find information about this on your current programme.   You may enter one item in each competition.   Each item will earn one point for the entrant.   Should your entry receive first place you will score additional 3 points, second place 2 points and third place 1 points, these points are in addition to the entry point.   A cup is awarded annually to the member with the most points for that year.

The Federation Newsletter “Hotpot” is available to members.  This tells of Federation News and the many activities available to us throughout the county, together with news from various other W.I.s      Please note that if you are unable to attend a meeting it is your responsibility to make sure that someone collects the Newsletter on your behalf or it will be held over to the next meeting that you attend.

Hutton and Howick Women’s Institute awards a bursary of £200.00 and several bursaries of £50.00 each year  towards a course of the winner’s choice.   Courses can be taken on any educational course of the winner's choice.   Alston Hall is a popular venue as is the Women’s Institutes own facility, Denman College in Oxfordshire.  The “Denman Experience” is one not to be missed and it enables like-minded women the chance to meet and enjoy something different.    Just ask any member who has been to Denman!    The Lancashire Federation also award a bursary for a 3 day Denman College course.

Subscriptions are due annually in January and are currently (2018) £41.00, should you join our Institute in October, November or December your subscription will take you through all of the following year and will not become due again until the January of the year after.   At present, County and National Federation take approximately 52% of the subscription. Duel members will pay £20.00 to their second Institute.

The National WI magazine, W.I. Life, is full of WI news and features, cookery and crafts, readers letters, competitions, health, and gardening. It is included in your annual subscription fee and eight copies a year will be posted direct to all members.

Our Craft Group of 15 to 20 members meet on alternate Thursdays and enjoy exchanging ideas and learning new skills from each other or from visiting tutors.   The Book Club meet once a month and the Walking Group also meet once a month and walk on average 4 to 5 miles and the small, but keen, Swimming Group meet each Thursday at Penwortham Leisure Centre.

Our Social organiser arranges an excellent variety of outings for us.   We have enjoyed Christmas Markets as well as drama and musical theatre trips.   Meals out are always very popular as well as outings to Garden Shows, Stately Homes, County and National events.

We hope that this information has been of use to you but if there is anything else you would like to know about our W.I. please get in touch via the "Contacts" page.
